The area known as Galicia, which is located just to the north of Portugal, is a hilly and damp area with a rugged coast and interesting local traditions and dialect.

Places to visit

The main town in the area is Coruna which has a wealth of interesting old places of worship and architecture, as well as some stunning old remnants of times gone by, which can still be viewed on the homes of the locals. The city also boasts an old harbour which was instrumental in the cities past, as well as a charming promenade and old section. Some of the most beautiful buildings in the city include the churches and museums.

The capital city, Santiago de Compostela, has a stunning layout with gorgeous buildings. A stunning church dominated the middle of the old town and you can take a look at many interesting constructions including a few places of worship as well as the old Uni.

Many other towns throughout the area boast interesting places of worship, including ferienhäuser spanien Ourese, Vigo and Lugo, and they are definitely worth a stop if travelling in the region.

The coastline of the region has many charming fishing villages and towns, as well as the beautiful large town of Ribadeo, which has a quaint feel to its old town centre. On down the coast you’ll find some lovely sands and shorelines which maintain an undeveloped charm. At the very north you’ll be able to enjoy some fabulous panoramic views over the surrounding area and sea.

A lot of the region is largely agricultural and there are some beautiful old towns which lack the brash development of the south east coast of Spain. The wilds surrounding such towns are vast and full of woods and lakes, as well as mountains.

The region surrounding Valdovino boasts some beautiful sandy beaches and estuaries. The area is undeveloped and charming, and you can find deserted beaches and roads entirely to yourself. They city of Ferrol is worth a visit, as is the route from the town out to La Coruna which is full of old palaces, churches, nunneries and small old towns.

Worth a stop are the wonderful old streets of Pontedeume, which operates a traditional market where you’ll be able to buy all the local wares. The area has many other charming towns and villages that you will pass through on your way, including the many fishing villages along the coast.
